Clinic helps smokers quit

The SDHU is one of very few public health units in Ontario to offer a Tobacco Treatment Clinic. Since its inception in January 2006, this clinic has provided intensive cessation counselling to more than 200 people who wanted to stop smoking.

The SDHU currently has two certified tobacco treatment specialists who provide personal cessation counselling. During the hour-long sessions, the tobacco treatment specialist helps clients determine their readiness to quit and the best approaches to becoming smoke-free. The specialist also helps clients develop a quit plan. This plan typically includes understanding why a client smokes, treatment options, and how to stay smoke-free once they have quit. This free service is offered by appointment at the SDHU main office on Paris Street in Greater Sudbury.  Because of the chronic relapsing nature of an addiction to nicotine, the number of counselling sessions a client can book is unlimited.
