Beach Water Testing

Monday, June 25, 2012

The Sudbury & District Health Unit has started testing the beach water quality at 35 designated beaches in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts. Throughout the summer, the Health Unit collects weekly water samples from these beaches.

If the samples from a beach exceed the acceptable bacteriological water quality standards for bathing beaches, the Health Unit warns the public. The Health Unit posts signs at the beach advising that it is unsafe for swimming, issues a notice to the media, and updates the beach status information posted on its website at www.sdhu.com.

In addition to the warning, the Health Unit starts collecting daily samples at the beach to monitor the water quality. A second notice is issued to advise the public that swimming is once again safe if the bacterial levels return to an acceptable level.

For information about the status of local beaches, visit the Health Unit’s website at www.sdhu.com or call 705.522.9200, toll-free 1.866.522.9200.
